Optical fibre is unique transmission medium. Fibre are made of dielectric material; they are immune to radiated and conducted interreference. Fiber optic is most expensive, most reliable method for high speed or long-distance communication. The medium used in fiber optic transmission is glass or plastic.
The light wave is used as carrier in optical transmission system is an electromagnetic wave with a wavelength around 1 µm and oscillation frequency of about 300 Hz. The typical optical fiber wavelengths are 850nm,1310nm and 1550nm;all being located near infrared range of electromagnetic spectrum.
